Kangana Ranaut: ‘When I first started, I was a replica of Madhubala.’

Kangana Ranaut has said she was a replica of young Madhubala when she was younger. Madhubala died on this day 54 years ago.

Kangana Ranaut said on the anniversary of the death of legendary actor Madhubala that she used to look like her younger self. She used a collage of her own and Madhubala’s photos to make her point. She also gushed over old photos of herself from when she was just starting in Bollywood.

Kangana wrote on her Instagram Stories on Thursday, sharing a collage of Madhubala and her photos, “As people want me to play cinema goddess Madhubala on screen, when I started I was a replica of Madhubala’s younger days, not sure about it now.”

She also posted a solo photo of herself in a black blouse and skirt with the caption, “Oh God, this is from my first year in the film industry.”

Madhubala was a film industry superstar in the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s. Mughal-e-Azam, in which she co-starred with Dilip Kumar, is one of India’s most successful films. Neel Kamal (1947), Amar (1954), Mahal (1949), Badal (1951), Tarana (1951), Mr. & Mrs. ’55 (1955), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and Half Ticket (1962), Howrah Bridge and Kala Pani (both 1958), and Barsaat Ki Raat (1962) are among her other memorable films (1960).

Kangana made her film debut in 2006 with Gangster. She was most recently seen in an action role in Dhaakad, which was a box-office flop. She is currently working on the Tamil film Chandramukhi 2 and studying classical dance.

She recently finished filming her first solo feature, Emergency (after Manikarnika which she co-directed with Krish Jagarlamudi). In the film, which she also produced, she plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Anupam Kher plays Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade plays Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman plays Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Satish Kaushik plays Jagjivan Ram, and others appear in the film.
