India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar rips on billionaire investor George Soros for his remarks that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will “have to answer questions” from investors on the Adani-Hindenburg row. EAM Jaishankar called him “old, rich, dangerous and opinionated”, launching an attack on Soros for claiming that PM Modi had been “silent” on the Adani topic.

“Mr. Soros is an old, wealthy opinionated person sitting in New York who still believes that his views should determine how the entire world works…such people invest resources in shaping narratives,” S Jaishankar said.

George Soros, while delivering a speech at the 2023 Munich Security Conference on Thursday, predicted that PM Modi will weakened by the business troubles of business tycoon Gautam Adani. Soros said PM Modi would “have to answer questions” from foreign investors and parliament on allegations of fraud and stock manipulation at Adani’s industrial empire.

The stocks of the Adani Group tumbled after US-based short seller Hindenburg released a report accusing the Adani group companies of stock manipulation and accounting fraud.

Soros has said the turmoil engulfing Gautam Adani’s business empire that has shaken faith in India as an investment opportunity may open the door to a democratic revival in the country. Soros’s remarks on the Centre and industrialist Gautam Adani have created a stir.

Hitting out at the billionaire for “opening the door to a democratic revival” remark, Jaishankar said, “People like him think an election good if the person they want to see, wins and if the election throws up a different outcome then they will say it is a flawed democracy and the beauty is that all this is done under the pretense of advocacy of open society.” (sic)

The BJP has been alleging that Soros targeted not just PM Modi but also the Indian democratic system.
