Pongal festival celebrated with zeal across Tamil Nadu on Sunday, heralding the birth of the auspicious Tamil month ‘Thai.’

People decorated their homes and got up early to celebrate the day. 

People prepared the rice and jaggery sweet dish Pongal and chanted “Pongal-o-Pongal” to represent the new month’s overflowing joy and prosperity.

The month Thai considered auspicious where marriages held and new ventures initiated.

A festive spirit gripped the state even as scores of people left for their hometown from here in the last two days to join their families to celebrate Pongal.

It dedicated to the sun god, Surya, and corresponds to Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival under many regional names celebrated throughout India.

The three days of the Pongal festival called Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, and Mattu Pongal. Some Tamils celebrate a fourth day of Pongal known as Kanum Pongal.

This type of pongal made during the Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu. And during Sankranthi festival in Andhra Pradesh. Ingredients can include rice, coconut, and mung bean.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, Chief Minister M K Stalin, state Leader of Opposition, and AIADMK interim general secretary K Palaniswami among others extended their Pongal greetings.

Pongal greetings to everyone, particularly the Tamil people worldwide. May this festival bring happiness and wonderful health in our lives,” he said.
