Hockey World Cup 2023: India defeated Spain By 2-0 in first match

On Friday, January 13, India kicked off their Hockey World Cup 2023 campaign with a 2-0 win over lower-ranked Spain at the spectacular Bisra Munda Stadium in Rourkela. 

Amit Rohidas and Hardik Singh’s goals gave India three points in front of a raucous crowd in the state-of-the-art 21,000-seater stadium.

After a slow start in the first quarter, India dominated possession and circle penetrations in a dominant performance that would have pleased coach Graham Reid.

India is second in Pool D after England took the lead after a 5-0 victory over Wales in their World Cup 2023 opener.

Ind defeated Spain for the first time since February 2022, thanks to a strong defensive performance. 

India blew a 2-0 lead against Spain in the FIH Pro League in November 2022 and held to a draw.

The error not repeated on Friday, as India put on a spirited performance, with goalkeeper Krishan Pathak making some crucial saves.
