Israeli Nadav Lapid slams the ‘Kashmir Files.’


The Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid was the jury head at the International Film Festival of India. He criticized the entry saying the jury was “disturbed and shocked” by the film. And deemed it “inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival.”A former Israeli ambassador has termed filmmaker Nadav Lapids remark on The Kashmir Files “unfortunate”, emphasizing that the comment reflects “his own and only his views.”

‘The Kashmir Files’ It is a film by Vivek Agnihotri on the exodus from the Kashmir Valley in the 90s. And shown at the 53rd International Film Festival of India in Goa.

“An unfortunate comment which reflects his own and only his views and total lack of basic sensitivity or knowledge of what he talked about,” the former envoy said in a tweet.

The Kashmir Files is based on the killing of Kashmiri Pandits. During an upsurge in militancy in the Valley in the 1990s. And the community’s subsequent exodus from the region screened at IFFI on November 22 as a part of the Indian Panorama Section.

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and ‘The Kashmir Files’ director Vivek Agnihotri have also waded into the row. Kher – Who played the lead role – said Lapid had hurt people who have been victims of this tragedy and Agnihotri simply posted a cryptic tweet that said ‘the truth… can make people lie.

Amit Malviya – the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s IT Cell boss – compared Lapid’s remark to the denial of the Holocaust. “For the longest time, people even denied the Holocaust and called ‘Schindler’s List propaganda, just like some are doing to Kashmir files.

Actor Swara Bhasker – a vocal critic of the Narendra Modi government – also tweeted in support of Lapid. Sharing a news report on the controversy and writing, ” it’s pretty clear to the world (sic).”

‘The Kashmir Files‘ – written and directed by Agnihotri – is based on Kashmiri Pandits’ exodus from the Valley in the 1990s, when militancy was rampant. 

The movie has been praised and promoted by top BJP leaders, including union home minister Amit Shah. They called it a bold representation of the truth’.

The chief ministers of several states ruled by the party granted the film tax-free status.
